Worked at the U.S. Department of Energy's Laramie Energy Technology Center.

Served on the staff of the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee for Senator John Chafee (R-Rhode Island).

Served on the staff of U.S. Senator Alan K. Simpson (R-Wyoming)(1981-96).

Was Washington representative of the American Petroleum Institute (1996-2000).

In 2000 joined the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) as director of BIO's industrial and environmental section, and as of 2005 was vice president in charge of that section.

In 2001 was elected vice-chair of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s Task Force on Biotechnology for Sustainable Industrial Development.

Chairs the Energy Future Coalition's Bioenergy/Agriculture Working Group, whose members include executives of the American Farm Bureau, American Soybean Association, DuPont Bio-Based Materials, Pew Center on Global Climate Change, Cargill Dow, Genencor, Inverizon International, and Defense Life Sciences.

Is a member of the board of the University of Wyoming Research Corporation's Western Research Institute. (1,2)
